Business Rejects Corruption: Chamber Signs Cooperation Agreement with Transparency International Macedonia

14/11/2024

The Economic Chamber of North Macedonia and Transparency International-Macedonia have strengthened their partnership by signing an agreement aimed at intensifying efforts to combat corruption.

The business community increasingly recognizes corruption as a serious obstacle to the effective and efficient rule of law, economic growth, and the stability of a competitive market economy. It acknowledges the urgent need for significant steps to address this challenge.

In line with these efforts to combat corruption and raise awareness of its impact on business, the collaboration between the Economic Chamber and Transparency International-Macedonia was formalized through a cooperation agreement signed by their respective presidents, Branko Azeski and Blagoj Pandovski.

"The Chamber’s stance on crime, corruption, and the grey economy is zero tolerance," stated Azeski at a press conference following the signing.

"There will be no easing of operations for legal entities until bribery and corruption are eradicated. Institutions must commit to uncovering the root causes of these issues, and achieving broad consensus on their complete elimination is essential," said Branko Azeski, President of the Chamber.

Blagoj Pandovski, President of Transparency International-Macedonia, highlighted the fruitful collaboration to date, including the development of a Code of Business Ethics for joint-stock companies and later for small and medium-sized enterprises. He also noted the success of the Zero Tolerance for Corruption project, which promotes the most effective corporate governance. Pandovski added that this agreement would enhance the integrity of the business sector and strengthen efforts to combat corruption in business operations.

"To become attractive for investments again, we must seek support from the European Union, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, rule of law, and corruption-related issues," added Azeski.

Both parties agreed that the fight against corruption requires commitment at all levels of society. It is crucial for all relevant institutions to act within their mandates and improve their responsiveness. Only through joint efforts and coordination can tangible results be achieved, ensuring that institutions truly serve citizens and businesses, ultimately restoring their attractiveness to investors.
