Business Connections with a Friendly Note

27/12/2024

The Economic Chamber of Macedonia and Turkey's DEİK collaboratively organized business meetings focused on exploring new investment opportunities, infrastructure projects, and fostering the digitalization of processes.

For successful business stories, it is essential to first establish successful friendly connections. Without mutual respect and appreciation as people or nations, it is impossible to treat one another as business partners.

This sentiment was exemplified yesterday in Skopje, where the Turkish business elite gathered. The business forum and the attendance of a large delegation, including over 150 participants from business and politics, culminated in a friendly evening gathering. As the president of the most powerful business organization, the Economic Chamber, I had the honor not only to be among the guests but also to be seated next to Mr. Nihat Özdemir, the owner of Limak Holding, in a place of distinction.

At the close of 2024, during a time when most business activities are wrapping up, the large Turkish delegation visited Skopje, offering a handshake to foster new partnerships and economic agreements.

I am pleased and satisfied that this meeting occurred at the year's end, enabling us to summarize the results of our joint efforts, analyze outcomes, and propose activities for 2025—a year of critical importance for both economies and, more broadly, for the economies of Europe and the Balkans. I believe these meetings should become more frequent, as they allow us to better navigate the crises ahead in these challenging times.

However, this meeting, which might seem similar to other such events, has a few specific characteristics that give it unique significance.

First, the Republic of Türkiye and the Republic of North Macedonia have consistently maintained excellent political relations. From an economic perspective, however, our goal is to find the best solutions for cooperation that benefit both communities without causing harm to either country.

Second, by expanding cooperation, Macedonia gains access to a market of over 80 million consumers. Beyond this, considering Türkiye’s strong business relationships with other countries, we gain a vital partner equipped with valuable insights into global developments that may lead to future instabilities and uncertainties.

Third, trade is not yet at the desired level, but there is ample room for growth. Joint efforts, particularly in diagonal cumulation of free trade, can significantly contribute. More importantly, this collaboration enables Macedonia to rely on the resources of a global power like Türkiye.

Fourth, the presence of Turkish capital and businesses in Macedonia deserves special emphasis. These companies are active members of our Chamber, and we have excellent cooperation with them and their organization, MATTO. We will continue developing these relationships and supporting their business expansion.

For these reasons, I anticipate more investments, additional business forums, joint ventures into third markets, and increased participation of our companies in trade fairs in Türkiye. These fairs serve as a steppingstone to major global markets.
